What Data Montis Can Use
Montis reads everything from your Intervals.icu account: activities, zones, wellness and your athlete settings. This page explains which data Montis uses, what changes when you train with heart rate only, and how different sports are grouped.
Where the data comes from
Montis does not connect to your watch, bike computer or wellness device. Each device syncs to Intervals.icu, and Montis reads Intervals.icu. If a value is missing or wrong in Intervals.icu, it is missing or wrong in Montis too.
See Getting Started with Intervals & Montis for connecting your devices.
Wellness: HRV and resting heart rate
HRV
Montis uses the HRV value that Intervals.icu stores in your daily wellness, from whichever device you sync. Garmin, Oura, Whoop, Polar and other services can all send wellness data to Intervals.icu.
- Montis compares your HRV with your own baseline, not with other athletes.
- Montis does not convert between vendors. Stay with one device and one measuring routine so the trend means something.
- If you switch device, expect a few weeks before the baseline settles again.
Resting heart rate
Montis looks for resting HR in this order:
- Daily wellness resting HR from your device. This gives a trend: your last 7 days against your last 28 days. It needs at least 7 days of values for the recent average and 28 days for the baseline.
- Resting HR in your Intervals.icu settings. Montis uses this as a fixed baseline only. There is no trend or change signal.
To get the trend, make sure your device sends resting HR to Intervals.icu wellness every day.
Power or heart rate
Montis works with power, heart rate or both.
- For each activity, Montis uses power zones when the activity has power, and heart-rate zones when it does not. The two are never added together for the same activity.
- Zone distributions are shown as percentages. Sweet Spot is shown, but it is not added to the totals.
Training with heart rate only
If you have no power meter, Montis still works, with some limits:
- Polarisation and zone charts use your HR zones instead of power.
- Fat-oxidation and other metabolic estimates are less precise. When Intervals.icu has no intensity value for your sessions, Montis falls back to a fixed assumption.
- The headline heart-rate zone chart counts rides only. Running and your other sports appear in the sport-specific and multi-sport views (see below).
- Power-based metrics, such as power curves, W′ and Ride Fatigue Resistance, are not available.
Set up your zones
- In Intervals.icu, open your sport settings for each sport you train.
- Check FTP or threshold pace, LTHR, max HR and the zone boundaries.
- Check that each activity has the right activity type (for example Run, not Workout), because the type decides the sport group.
Sport groups
Montis groups activity types by sport, so a run and a ride are not mixed in the same zone chart.
| Group | Activity types |
|---|---|
| Ride | Ride, VirtualRide, GravelRide, MountainBikeRide, TrackCycling, EBikeRide, EMountainBikeRide, Handcycle, Velomobile |
| Run | Run, TrailRun, VirtualRun |
| Swim | Swim, OpenWaterSwim, VirtualSwim |
| Ski | AlpineSki, BackcountrySki, NordicSki, RollerSki, Snowboard, VirtualSki, Snowshoe |
| Hike | Walk, Hike |
| Row | Row, VirtualRow |
Left out of zone and polarisation figures: strength (WeightTraining, Crossfit), Yoga, Pilates, Golf, the generic Workout and HIIT types, Elliptical, StairStepper, racket and team sports, RockClimbing, and paddling and board sports (Kayaking, Canoeing, StandUpPaddling, Surfing, Windsurf, Sail).
Activity type matters. A run saved as Workout is left out of your zone figures. Fix the type in Intervals.icu and the next report picks it up.
Three views of polarisation
The Polarisation Index (Treff) cards in the weekly metrics each show their scope:
| Card label | What it uses |
|---|---|
| Power · cycling | Power zones from your rides |
| Sport-specific · main sport | Your main sport only (the group with the most zone time), power if available, else HR |
| Multi-sport · all endurance | All endurance sports together, power where available, else HR |
A cyclist with a power meter may see similar values on all three cards. A runner, or an athlete who trains with heart rate only, will usually find the sport-specific and multi-sport cards more useful.
What Montis does not do
- It does not read activities that reach Intervals.icu only through Strava. See Connection & Data Troubleshooting.
- It does not estimate power for activities that have no power data.
- It does not invent missing wellness values. Missing data is shown as missing.
