Device & System Troubleshooting

4 min read·Applies to: Montis AppOpen in the Montis App

The live device check described on this page runs inside the Montis App, on your own device. Open this page in the Montis App to run it.

Montis is designed to run seamlessly across desktops, laptops, tablets, and smartphones as both a modern web application and an installable Progressive Web App (PWA).

This guide explains how Montis inspects your device environment, how to interpret the Device Information (for troubleshooting) panel, and how to resolve common connectivity, layout, or caching issues.

1. Live Device Information Panel

The interactive Device Information (for troubleshooting) panel at the top of this section continuously inspects your browser runtime and hardware capabilities to ensure Montis is operating under optimal conditions:

Display & Screen Metrics

  • Platform: Reports your underlying operating system architecture (e.g. Win32 for Windows, MacIntel for macOS, Linux x86_64, iOS, or Android).
  • Width & Height: Displays your current active browser viewport dimensions in pixels. As you resize your browser window, these values update in real time.
  • Orientation: Detects current screen rotation (e.g. landscape-primary (0°) or portrait-primary (0°)).
  • Device Class: Automatically classifies your experience into Desktop, Tablet, or Mobile:
    • Desktop (> 1024px): Displays dense bento grids, full multi-week meso charts, and expanded sidebars.
    • Tablet (640px – 1024px): Adapts with swipeable sub-menus and touch-optimized chart controls.
    • Mobile (< 640px): Streamlines layouts with bottom drawers, horizontal swipe gestures, and 44px minimum touch targets.

Application Build & Cache Validation

  • App Version: The official semantic release version of the running Montis client (e.g. v5.4.116, matching VITE_APP_VERSION in your configuration), accompanied by the exact UTC build timestamp.
  • Commit / Build Hash: The unique production build artifact identifier (e.g., dev_KWCG5 or git commit SHA). This confirms whether your browser is running the newest code or serving a cached older build.
  • CHECK FOR UPDATES Button: Queries the server and checks the registered Service Worker to verify if a newer application bundle is available.

Connectivity & Protocol Telemetry

  • Connection Type: Displays the primary protocol channel (WebSocket / HTTP/2 + SSE).
  • Connected: Real-time online/offline indicator. Turns red if your internet connection drops or if browser privacy extensions block network calls.
    • Why does it say "4G" or "10 Mbps" on fast home broadband / copper / fiber? The browser inspects network status via the standard W3C Network Information API (navigator.connection). By design, this browser standard only defines four performance tiers: 'slow-2g', '2g', '3g', and '4g'. There is no "5g", "wi-fi", or "fiber" tier in the browser specification. Any connection with roundtrip latency under 100ms and bandwidth over 2 Mbps is classified by your browser into the highest tier: 4g (Fast / High-Speed). Furthermore, modern browsers (Chrome, Chromium, Edge) intentionally cap the reported downlink speed at 10 Mbps to protect user privacy and prevent websites from "fingerprinting" your exact broadband plan. Your actual connection is running at full copper/broadband line speed.
  • Reconnect Delay: The exponential backoff interval (in milliseconds, e.g. 9975 ms) used by the background synchronization engine to re-establish connection if an interruption occurs.
  • API Ping Latency: Measures live roundtrip latency to the Montis API gateway, helping identify local Wi-Fi latency or cellular network lag.

2. Common Troubleshooting Scenarios

A. Blank Screen, Old Version, or Stale Cache

If a recent Montis update was deployed but your browser displays an older version or cached interface:

  1. Click CHECK FOR UPDATES in the Device Information panel.
  2. If stale assets persist, perform a hard refresh:
    • Windows / Linux: Press Ctrl + F5 or Ctrl + Shift + R.
    • macOS: Press Cmd + Shift + R.
    • Mobile / PWA: Close the app from your app switcher, reopen it while online, or pull to refresh.
  3. You can also use Factory Reset & Purge Cache from the User Profile menu to clear stored application state while keeping your Intervals.icu account safe.

B. "Not Connected" or API Call Failures

If the connection indicator shows Offline or requests fail:

  1. Ad-blockers and Privacy Extensions: Extensions such as uBlock Origin, Privacy Badger, or Brave Shields can sometimes intercept API calls or WebSocket handshakes. Try temporarily disabling shields for montis.icu or whitelist the domain.
  2. Corporate / Guest Wi-Fi Firewalls: Some enterprise or hotel Wi-Fi networks block non-standard ports or streaming protocols. Test connecting via a mobile cellular hotspot to verify.
  3. Intervals.icu OAuth Expiration: If Intervals.icu revoked access or the session token expired, open the App Hub, press Disconnect apps, then Connect Intervals (see Your Montis Connection).

C. Display & Layout Formatting on Ultra-Wide or Mobile Screens

  • Ultra-wide Monitors (1440p / 4K): Montis uses container constraints (max-w-7xl mx-auto) so dashboards do not stretch across thousands of pixels.
  • Zoom Level: If text appears truncated or controls overlap, ensure your browser zoom is set to 100% (Ctrl + 0 or Cmd + 0).
  • Multi-touch Tablets (iPad / Galaxy Tab): Montis automatically enables touch interaction and full-width charts when touch points are detected.

3. Submitting a Diagnostics Report

When reporting an issue on the Intervals.icu Community Forum or contacting Montis support:

  1. Navigate to this Device & System Troubleshooting guide.
  2. Click the Copy Diagnostics button in the header of the Device Information panel.
  3. Paste the formatted text into your forum post or message.

The report includes your exact screen dimensions, OS version, browser build, network latency, and connection status, allowing the Montis team to immediately reproduce and resolve the issue.

Or press Raise Incident next to Copy Diagnostics. See Support and Raising an Incident.
