What next?
What next? turns the Adaptive Decision Engine (ADE) decision into plain advice for today and the next few days. It tells you whether to keep, adjust or reduce your planned sessions, and why.
Montis decides, the AI Coach explains. What next restates the Montis decision in plain words. It never makes up a new decision, a session or a number.
Where to find it
- Overview: in the ADE card, under the status pill. Press WHAT NEXT?.
- Micro: in its own What next panel, under phase governance and your target event. Press WHAT NEXT?.
- Workflow (Coaching dashboard): press the green WHAT NEXT? ASK THE AI COACH pill. It turns on Coach mode, scrolls to the Workflow AI Coach and asks the question there.
- AI Coach chats (Overview, Micro and Workflow): tap the WHAT NEXT? suggestion chip.
What you get
While it works, the button shows Asking the coach…. The answer has up to three short lines:
| Line | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Today | Keep, adjust or reduce today's planned session, named. It says if the session is already done, or if nothing is planned today. |
| Next days | Which planned sessions in the coming days should change, or that no changes are needed. |
| Why | The one or two signals behind the advice. |
Empty lines are hidden. If the call fails you see "Couldn't get an answer. Try again."
How it decides
- It follows the final Montis decision, in this order: the training guidance, then any taper adjustment, then the ADE directive.
- If your plan already fits the required training phase, it says no changes are needed, unless a taper adjustment or a planned future action asks for one.
- It only names sessions that are already in your Intervals.icu calendar or recent activities.
- It turns engine labels into plain words. For example, "overridden by phase" means the plan's phase takes priority over what you could handle today. See Phase governance in Adaptive Decision Engine (ADE).
Old reports
If the report covers an earlier week (it ended more than a day before today), you see "This report is from an earlier week. Refresh it for today's advice." Only Why is given. Refresh the report to get Today and Next days.
Ask again
The answer is saved for the day on this device, per athlete, report and language. Opening it again, or asking the AI Coach, gives the same answer. To get a fresh one, press the round-arrow icon next to the What next heading (tooltip: Ask again).
It does not change your calendar
What next only gives advice. The card never writes to Intervals.icu. If you then ask the AI Coach to move or change a session, nothing is written until you press Confirm.
In ChatGPT and Claude
Weekly reports through the Montis connector end with a What next section with the same Today, Next days and Why lines, in place of the old closing reflection question. Season, wellness and summary reports do not have it.
AI key and usage
What next uses a light, quick model. Subscribers use the shared Montis AI key up to their monthly allowance, and each answer counts towards it. Everyone else uses their own Gemini key; if none is saved, the app asks for one. See Montis Gemini App Setup.
